The pursuit of love occupies more of our lifetime than most of us would care to admit. This need for companionship is a force that has driven all societies since the dawn of man. And since the dawn of man, there have been matchmakers.
Matchmakers have been around for centuries. In some cultures, the matchmaker is a profession. The history of matchmaking goes back to the Ashkenazi Jewish Shadchan, and the Hindu astrologer. They were often called upon to find the right candidates for marriage and they made the claim that the stars sanctified matches.

The Matchmaker would look for a "good prospect" that could support his future family in the same economic lifestyle as the lifestyle of the parents. The approval of both sets of parents was important.

In rural societies Matchmakers would act as formal chaperones and would attend social events such as community dances. They would advise families of any romances they noticed. 

It's only fair to say that in communities where arranged marriages were not the norm, the Matchmaker did not have a huge amount of power in those developing relationships.
In Western Societies the clergy played a key role, as they continue to do in modern times. Finding suitable marriage prospects was one of the "side" functions of the village priest in Medieval Catholic society, and of the rabbis in traditional Jewish communities.

In the movie "Fiddler on the Roof" you can see the role of a Jewish Matchmaker in Russia around the turn of the century.

In many countries Matchmaking, or arranging marriages is a common practice. In Singapore every person has access to some sort of the matchmaking services that were once reserved for royalty or upper classes.  There have been communities in The United States of America where matchmaking started as recently as the 1960s.
 
This was about the time that "computer dating" became popular. You filled out a card with your characteristics, mailed it, and you would receive a list with possible matches.
The acceptance of dating systems has made the role of the traditional matchmaking professionals more popular. There is a wide range of such services available.

Matchmaking has come a long way since the days of the matchmaker in medieval times. From the local Matchmaker, to the hundreds of online matchmaking websites,. From the matchmaker present at community dances and picnics, to the Organized Speed Dating Events. From small villages having a Matchmaker to government operated matchmaking services like the Tianjin Municipal Trade Union Matchmakers Association and Beijing Military and Civilian Matchmaking Service.

In India, where traditionally Nayans are the ones who matches individuals, the potential of finding your own partner on your own terms and conditions through the World Wide Web is embraced without hesitation. 70% of the 60 million singles aged 20 to 34 believes that arranged marriages are more successful than love marriages. 15% of the profiles registered online are done by the parents.

Bharat Matrimony, a leading site in India with 10 million members claims to have arranged about a million marriages. They have been in business for about 10 years and therefore know the industry well. They also reports a growth of about 50% each year, proving you can't argue with the success of  matchmaking.

In the western world however in modern times, matchmaking services have until recently always been seen as a last resort - only really reserved for those 'sad' people who for one reason or another, seem unable to mingle and match like 'normal' folk - and need some extra help.
Of course the problem of the stigma actually lies with those who won't use a matchmaker because they are worried about 'what people will think of them' - often leaving the person who has thrown in the towel and accepted a bit of help - hitched and happy!

Interestingly in many cultures (where people are less image conscious and in some ways more mature or philosophical) matchmaking is seen as a great and integral part of life - a business or ministry that is seen as a noble and necessary one. Of course many cultures practice arranged marriages which at first glance is an excellent idea and carried many positives - especially as parents are likely in most cases to want the best for their children.

The negatives of course being that people often don't get married to people who are compatible, since the partners or at least one of them - isn't attracted on a physical level and so the relationships can break down like any other. But for sure - the thinking behind arranged marriages is a good one.
